The Achilles' heel of the air disc brake in actual use:

– The air disc brake exists only in a floating calliper design: the actuator is integrated in the calliper to provide adaptation to friction material wear;

– Because of the important mass of the integrated actuator calliper, this type of braking system has poor resistance to shock and road vibrations, leading to irregular functionality, frequent repairs and higher maintenance costs.

The astéria brake was created to address these limitations and more.

The astéria brake is composed of a fixed caliper and a floating disc, as utilised in aviation:

– The pneumatic actuator is solidly linked and thus part of the axel;

– The integrated piston generates pressure against the disc onto the external brake pad;

– The disc is guided on a floating hub design.

The friction material of the brake pads cover the major part of the disc surface, which insures longer friction and disc life.
It is many more times superior when compared to the integrated actuator floating calliper design and resembles drum brake friction material life span.
